Arjun Dhuri Honored with Desh Ratna Award for Record-Breaking Himalayan Cycling Expedition

New Delhi, 29 April  2025 — In a proud moment for the nation, Arjun Dhuri has been conferred with the prestigious Desh Ratna Award for his record-breaking solo cycling expedition from Manali to Khardungla — one of the highest motorable passes in the world. This national honor recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional courage, resilience, and dedication to pushing human limits in service of national inspiration.

In August 2022, Arjun Dhuri undertook a feat that few dare to attempt: cycling across the rugged and treacherous Himalayan stretch from Manali to Khardungla, traversing 487 kilometers of some of the most challenging terrain on Earth. Braving high-altitude passes, unpredictable weather, and freezing temperatures, Dhuri’s journey stands as a monumental achievement in Indian adventure sports history.

A Route Less Traveled
Arjun’s expedition began in Manali, winding through the mountainous roads to Darcha (102 km), Sarchu (73 km), Debring (156 km via Pang), and Leh (125 km), before culminating at Khardungla Top (38 km) — an altitude of 17,582 feet above sea level.

The route included five formidable passes: Rohtang Pass, Baralacha La, Lungalacha La, Taglang La, and Nakeela, each presenting unique dangers such as landslides, thin air, and steep inclines.

Triumph Over Adversity
Throughout the journey, Dhuri battled sub-zero temperatures, sometimes dipping to -8°C, unpredictable terrain, and isolation at high altitude. Yet, powered by his passion and intense preparation, he pushed forward each day with unflinching resolve.

In a heartwarming moment, Dhuri was felicitated mid-journey by the Commanding Officer of the Ladakh Scouts and fellow soldiers. They honored him with a memento and the revered Ghatak Shawl, a military symbol of valor — acknowledging his grit and unwavering spirit.

A Mentor’s Role
Dhuri credited his success to the unwavering support of his mentor, Manish Jha, whose guidance and motivation helped him prepare both mentally and physically for the Himalayan challenge.

National Recognition
Presenting the Desh Ratna Award, the President of India praised Arjun Dhuri for “epitomizing the indomitable spirit of young India” and for “inspiring the nation to rise above limits, embrace challenges, and discover new frontiers.”

An Inspiration for a Generation
Dhuri’s achievement has not only etched his name in the records of endurance sports but also ignited a wave of enthusiasm among youth across India. His expedition is now widely cited as a symbol of what determination, discipline, and courage can accomplish.

As the country celebrates this remarkable milestone, Arjun Dhuri stands tall as a true Desh Ratna — a jewel of the nation — reminding us that the highest peaks can be conquered when one dares to dream and perseveres to achieve.
